Superior solid hardwood floors, made specifically for our desert climate.

Muscanell Millworks

Based out of Cortez, Colorado, Muscanell Millworks has been milling hardwood floors since the mid-1980's. Family-oriented and driven, their original vision of long-length, rustic hardwood floors has persisted through the decades. With a focus on dry materials, Muscanell Millworks makes floors specifically for our dry, arid landscape here in Reno, Nevada!

The typical challenge posed with solid hardwood floors in Reno is the humidity content of the wood, and how it interacts with our climate.
There is truth to this. A 3% difference in moisture content in a 5" hickory plank can cause 1/16" of movement, going up to 1/8" of movement on a 10" plank. This is why it is so important to us and the folks over at Muscanell to bring in, and work with materials that will perform! By ensuring each plank's moisture content is in a consistent range of 5%-7%, we can ensure the stability of the floors in your very own home.

Quality aside, Muscanell mills a wide variety of species, grades, and sizes.
They deal with mostly domestic hardwoods, such as White and Red Oak, Hickory, White Ash, American Cherry, and Walnut! These are available in four grades, varying by width: Hacienda (clear grade), Casa (light character), Madera (medium character), and Mesa Verde (high character). Scroll down to learn more about each of these!

Settling on the right floor for your home can be difficult. With Muscanell, you can rest assured that no matter what you choose, quality is the top priority!

A Quick Look at the Different Species Muscanell Offers

Coming in widths from 3" all the way to 10" on select species, we can provide each of these species in clear grade, all the way the high character!

Hickory

Ranking highest on the Janka Hardness Scale for domestic hardwoods, hickory floors are durable, elegant, and the perfect final touch for those looking for a busier floor! With plenty of color variation, and lots of movement, these floors make a statement. Available in 3" all the way up to 10" wide!

White Oak

A staple in the hardwood flooring world, we are comfortable recommending white oak floors to just about everybody! Neutral in tone, these floors work well with all all stain colors, and offer a classic, tasteful feel to your home. For a more contemporary look, we recommend more of a clear grade, and a wide plank! Available in 3" all the way up to 10" wide.

Rift and Quartered White Oak

With all the same benefits as a plain-sawn white oak floor, rift and quartered white oak boasts a beautiful grain structure that is second to none. Derived from lumber cut oriented at a 30-90 degree angle to the face of the plank, Muscanell achieves a tight, uniform, and unique grain structure, speckled with medullary rays. This grain structure also improves stability, and surface smoothness of your floor! Available in 3" to 8" wide.

Cathedral Cut White Oak

High in character, this cut is a combination of both plain-sawn, and rifted and quartered white oak floors. You keep the tight grain on the edges of the board, while enjoying the grand, open grain of the plain-sawn floors in the middle! Making for a fantastic rustic floor, you can expect lots of knots, holes, and other marks of character.
Available in 6" to 10" wide!

American Black Walnut

A little bit on the softer side, walnut is a very dense, stable product, with a bit more stability to changes to moisture than most other hardwoods. Naturally darker and more brown in tone, the deep color makes for a very full, elegant floor, wonderful for an exotic look! Available in 3" all the way up to 10" wide.

Red Oak

Still a customer favorite, red oak has a long history. In many of the homes we see in older areas of Reno, many of them still have the original, 2 1/4" wide red oak planks that the home was built with! A staple in American homes, and a classic, this floor becomes hard to beat. Still available in those 2 1/4" planks, all the way up to 7" wide!

White Ash

Moisture stability, long-length planks, stunning grain structure; I could go on. With rising demand, we are beginning to install more and more of this product into the beautiful custom homes of Reno. These floors are rather light in tone, and great for a contemporary look without foregoing the traditional feel of natural hardwood. Available in 3" all the way up to 10" wide!

American Cherry

A beautiful, fine-grained material with a reddish-brown heartwood, accompanied by a creamy colored sapwood creates the beautiful, rich look you see to the right. The natural tone of this floor does leave it with less staining options, but if you enjoy the depth of color, this is the perfect floor for you! Available in 3" up to 7" wide.

Now, what is the difference between Solid Hardwood, and Engineered?

While we do our due diligence in providing Reno with engineered floors that will last, there are a few key differences between these floors that you should be aware of!

Engineered hardwood floors can be a fantastic flooring option to go with, and certainly make for a beautiful floor in just about any home! They are prefinished, which means they require no sanding and finishing inside the house.

They are also a perfect fit for installation on concrete surfaces, and tend to last a relatively long time given the proper materials, installation, and maintenance. So why is it that we look to the solid materials first? The answer is simple: Longevity.
Most engineered hardwood flooring manufacturers require a relative humidity of 35% - 55% so as to not void the warranty. What this means is that, in Reno, if you do not have a humidifier, not only may your floors not perform properly, but your warranty is also no use.

Now, we have worked with these products for many years, and have sifted through brands and manufacturers in order to find the products that perform best in our region. Regardless, the manufacturer's recommendations still apply.
So who do we recommend when it comes to these floors? We love Mirage, Boen, Kahrs, Duchateau, California Classics, Somerset, and Barlinek Flooring. I will leave links below to their individual sites! Each of these brands provides a unique look, ranging from clean and contempory, to busy and rustic, to classic.

In our experience, these floors have all performed extremely well in our climate, and provide a spectrum of looks. Come on by our showroom to check them out!
